The Carters are partially responsible for the Louvre Museum’s continued status as the most visited museum in the world.
Famous pieces of art including Jacques-Louis David’s “The Coronation of Napoleon” and Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” served as the backdrop for Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s music video, which was shot at the Louvre last summer. By doing this, the artistic team not only questioned how Blackness is portrayed in art history, but they also assisted the historic museum in reaching a record-breaking 10.2 million visits.
The previous record, set in 2012, was 9.7 million visitors.
According to The Guardian, foreign visitors returning to Paris after the 2015 terrorist attacks were also responsible for the 25% increase (compared to 2017). international visitors accounted for three-quarters of the total number, with the United States hosting the most international visitors.
“It’s evident that 2018 was a remarkable year for the Louvre’s international reputation,” Jean-Luc Martinez, director of the museum, said on French radio. “Like the opening of the Louvre museum in Abu Dhabi, the Beyoncé video made sure that the Louvre was talked about all over the world, and one of the results of that was the incredible increase in visitors last year.”
