Robby Benson’s Journey: How His Wife Saved His Life

Robby Benson, the iconic teen idol, celebrated his 67th birthday on January 21, 2023. With a career spanning decades, he’s known for his roles in “Ice Castles,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and more.

But his greatest achievement is his 40-year marriage to Karla DeVito, who has been his rock through thick and thin.

The couple met on Broadway and has two children together. However, their love story is not without its challenges. Benson has undergone four open-heart surgeries, and his second surgery was botched, leading to years of breathing difficulties.

Through it all, Karla has been his advocate, finding doctors and ensuring he received the best treatment. Benson credits her with saving his life, saying, “I’m alive because of her.” She stood by him even when a “sadistic” nurse refused to untie his hands, causing him immense pain.

Despite his health struggles, Benson continued working, writing two books and a musical. His fourth surgery in 2010 was a success, and he now teaches at the Tisch Academy of Arts. When asked about their secret to a long and happy marriage, Benson says, “When we’re together, we can handle anything.”
