Beloved Fitness Icon Richard Simmons Passes Away at 76

Richard Simmons, the exuberant fitness guru famous for his infectious positivity, has passed away at the age of 76. The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a 911 call from his housekeeper and discovered Simmons deceased, with natural causes suspected.

Simmons, who recently celebrated his birthday, had stirred concern among fans in March with a Facebook post hinting at his mortality. He later clarified it was meant to encourage people to cherish each day.

Though Simmons had retreated from the public eye, there were rumors of a biopic earlier this year, which he dismissed. On social media, he remained active, expressing gratitude for birthday wishes just a day before his death.

Born Milton Teagle Simmons in New Orleans on July 12, 1948, he adopted the name Richard during his childhood. Simmons often shared how his childhood struggles with weight inspired his career in fitness, leading to the opening of his gym, Slimmons, in Beverly Hills.

Simmons released his first book, “Never Say Diet,” in 1980, followed by 11 more. His fitness videos, especially the “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” series, became hugely popular during the aerobics craze of the 1980s.

In March, Simmons revealed he had undergone surgery for skin cancer but was recovering well, urging his fans to get regular health check-ups.

Simmons leaves behind a legacy of positivity and fitness, encouraging countless individuals to lead healthier lives.
