Robby Benson’s Enduring Love and Unwavering Resilience

Robby Benson, the beloved teen idol of the 1970s, has led a life marked by both triumph and tribulation. As he celebrated his 67th birthday on January 21, 2023, Benson reflected on the journey that has brought him to where he is today. With a career spanning decades, Benson has made a lasting impact on the entertainment industry, but it’s his personal story that truly showcases his strength and resilience.

Benson’s rise to fame began at a young age, with starring roles in films like “Ice Castles,” “The Chosen,” and “Harry and Son.” He also lent his voice to the iconic character of the Beast in Disney’s animated classic “Beauty and the Beast.” Throughout his career, Benson has demonstrated his versatility as an actor, producer, and director, working on numerous projects, including the popular TV shows “Friends” and “Sabrina.”

One of the most significant moments in Benson’s life was meeting his wife, Karla DeVito, during the Broadway production of “The Pirates of Penzance.” Their whirlwind romance led to a proposal after just two months of courtship, and they have been inseparable ever since. The couple has two children, Zephyr and Lyric, and has celebrated 40 years of marriage.

However, Benson’s life has not been without its challenges. He has undergone multiple open-heart surgeries, beginning with his first at the age of 28. Despite these health setbacks, Benson has continued to work tirelessly, producing and directing various projects. His wife, Karla, has been his rock throughout these difficult times, providing unwavering support and care.

Benson’s second surgery was particularly harrowing, with a “sadistic” nurse refusing to untie his hands despite Karla’s objections. It was only when Karla intervened that the nurse relented, freeing Benson’s hands and removing his breathing tubes. This traumatic experience could have broken Benson, but instead, he continued to persevere, driven by his love for his family and his determination to overcome adversity.

Throughout his health struggles, Karla has been Benson’s advocate, helping him find the best doctors and treatment options. Benson credits Karla with saving his life, saying, “She helped me find doctors, she made sure I was getting the best treatment, the right medicine. I’m alive because of her.”

Benson’s story is a testament to the power of love and resilience. Despite facing numerous challenges, he has continued to thrive, both personally and professionally. As he looks back on his life, Benson is grateful for the love and support of his wife, Karla, and the lessons he has learned along the way.
