A Call That Changed Her View on Love

Violet had made peace with the idea that love wasn’t for her. As a radio host, she had listened to too many stories of heartbreak.

So, when James—a coworker she barely knew—asked her out, she was skeptical. But there was something about him that intrigued her, so she agreed.

The restaurant was perfect, the conversation flowed easily, and for the first time in years, she felt like she could let her guard down.

Then, her phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Is James with you?” a woman’s voice asked. “I’m Jane… his girlfriend.”

Violet’s heart pounded. She didn’t need to hear anything else. She ended the call, grabbed her things, and left.

The next day at work, James tried to talk to her, but she ignored him.

“Violet, what’s wrong?”

“Ask Jane,” she snapped, walking past him.

James looked stunned, but she didn’t care. He was just like the rest.

Or so she thought.

That evening, she saw Jane waiting outside the radio station. She hid in the shadows, listening.

“James, please,” Jane begged.

“Jane, we broke up months ago,” he said. “Stop doing this.”

Violet’s stomach twisted. She had assumed the worst, but maybe she had been wrong.

After Jane left, Violet approached James. “I might owe you an apology.”

James smirked. “Just might?”

She rolled her eyes. “Fine. I overreacted.”

James grinned. “That’s all I needed to hear.”
