A Mother’s Love

Lily, my stepdaughter, had been calling me “Mom” since she was four years old. But one morning, she looked me straight in the eye and addressed me as “Olivia” for the first time, like I was a stranger. I had no idea that someone from her past had quietly re-entered her life.

As a mother, I had always been there for Lily, from packing her lunches to attending her dance classes. But things started to change when she turned 10. She became distant, and her tone turned sharp. She stopped hugging me and cuddling on the couch. I thought it was just a phase, but it kept happening.

One day, I sat her down and asked her what was going on. She revealed that she had been in touch with her biological mother, Jenna, who had abandoned her years ago. I was shocked and heartbroken. How did this happen without my knowledge?

That night, I discovered the truth. Lily’s tablet was left charging on the counter, and I saw a message preview from someone saved as “Mama.” I didn’t mean to snoop, but when I swiped the screen, I found hundreds of messages, photos, and voice notes from Jenna. My hands started shaking as I realized that Jenna had been whispering poison into my daughter’s ears.

The next morning, I confronted my partner, Dan, about his secret meetings with Jenna. He claimed that Jenna wanted closure and had been in therapy, but I felt betrayed. I called my lawyer and told her everything. We filed for an emergency petition to bar Jenna from all contact with Lily.

The court eventually granted the petition, and Dan’s visits were supervised. I moved us to a safe place, and slowly, Lily began to heal. One night, while I was brushing her hair, she said, “Thanks for not giving up on me.” I kissed her forehead, and she didn’t need to say more.

A week later, during movie night, I handed her a cup of hot chocolate. She took it with a small smile and said, “Thanks, Mom.” That one word meant everything. It was a new beginning for us, and I was grateful to have my daughter back.
