Trapped on a Volcano: The Fight to Save Juliana Marins

Imagine hiking a breathtaking volcano only to find yourself stranded on a cliff, unable to move. That’s the nightmare facing Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old Brazilian tourist stuck for three days on Mount Rinjani, an active volcano in Indonesia. Since her fall on Saturday, June 21, a huge rescue operation has been underway to save her, capturing global attention and heartfelt pleas from her family.

Juliana, a publicist from Niterói, was trekking with a guide and others toward Mount Rinjani’s summit when disaster struck near Cemara Nunggal. According to her sister, Marianna, Juliana asked for a rest, but the group continued without her. Left alone and unsure where to go, she slipped and fell off a cliff. When the guide came back, he found her stranded far below. Fellow hikers told Brazilian TV that the trail was grueling, with poor visibility and slippery paths lit only by a small lantern.

On June 23, the Gunung Rinjani National Park shared that a drone had located Juliana, stuck on a rocky ledge 500 meters (1,640 feet) down, appearing still. Rescuers reached a point 350 meters (1,140 feet) deep but hit a wall—two large overhangs blocked their way, and they couldn’t set up anchors. Harsh weather forced them to halt, leaving Juliana’s fate uncertain. Her family says the team was just 350 meters away but made slow progress, fueling their desperate calls for help.

Social media is flooded with emotional appeals from Juliana’s loved ones. A video on an Instagram page dedicated to her rescue urged for immediate action, saying her life hangs in the balance after over two days. Unconfirmed posts on X suggest a helicopter rescue was attempted but canceled due to bad weather, while others claim drones are still searching. These reports remain unclear, but they show the urgency felt by those following her story.

Juliana’s plight highlights the dangers of Mount Rinjani, a stunning but risky spot that last erupted in 2016. As rescuers battle tough terrain and weather, her family and supporters hold onto hope. The world is watching, rooting for a miracle to bring this young adventurer back safely from the volcano’s grip.
