Tragic Lightning Strike Claims Newlywed’s Life on Florida Beach

A dream honeymoon in Florida ended in tragedy for 29-year-old Jake Rosencranz, who died after a freak lightning strike. Jake and his new wife, Leah, from Colorado, were soaking up the sun at New Smyrna Beach on June 20, 2025. What started as a perfect beach day turned deadly when a storm unexpectedly swept in, bringing a rare and fatal accident.

The weather was clear at the coast, but a storm brewing inland moved closer by noon. Jake was standing in shallow, ankle-deep water when one of 170 lightning bolts recorded that day struck him. The CDC notes that lightning strikes are incredibly rare, with odds of less than one in a million, yet they can be deadly. Sadly, Jake did not survive, passing away on June 21.

Lifeguards acted quickly, performing CPR and rushing Jake to the hospital, but he could not be saved, according to Tamra Malphurs, Volusia County Beach Safety Director. The sudden loss of a young man just beginning his married life has left his family and community heartbroken.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood of Volusia County shared a moving message online, expressing sorrow for Leah, who lost her husband far too soon. He thanked the lifeguards and medical staff for their tireless efforts. A GoFundMe campaign for Jake’s family has collected over $23,000, showing the outpouring of support for those he left behind.

Two others were struck by lightning that day at a local golf course but didn’t need medical care. Jake’s story highlights the importance of staying alert to weather changes, even on sunny days. His love for Leah and their brief time together will be cherished by all who knew him.
