Couple Skips Vacation After Bunk Bed Mix-Up Sparks Drama

Family trips are meant to create happy memories, but for one couple, a summer getaway turned sour over unfair sleeping arrangements. The couple, aged 36 and 34, agreed to split the cost of a three-bedroom Airbnb with the wife’s sister-in-law, excited for a fun vacation. But when they learned they’d be sleeping in bunk beds while a six-year-old got a queen room, they decided to cancel, causing a family rift.

Assuming the third bedroom was for the sister-in-law’s boyfriend, they didn’t question the setup when told it was the only option. But at a dinner, they learned the boyfriend’s young daughter was coming, which they welcomed. Then came the shock: the “third bedroom” was a small office with bunk beds for them, while the sister-in-law, her boyfriend, and the girl got proper queen-bed rooms. The couple felt cheated, paying half for the least comfortable spot.

The sister-in-law downplayed their concerns, saying the girl needed to be near her parents, but the couple wasn’t buying it. Their frustration grew when they discovered the sister-in-law planned to bring her dog to avoid boarding costs, despite their agreement to pay for pet boarding in Florida. Feeling taken advantage of, they backed out, offering to cover cancellation fees. The sister-in-law lashed out, blaming them for spoiling the child’s trip, but they held firm, tired of her one-sided arrangements.

Seeking clarity, the wife posted on Reddit’s “Am I The A**hole” forum, where users backed her up. They called the bunk bed assignment unfair, noting that adults shouldn’t be stuck with kids’ beds while paying equally. Many suspected the sister-in-law hid the truth to secure their money, and some wondered if the boyfriend’s slip was meant to alert them. The advice was clear: they were right to prioritize fairness.

The couple canceled their booking, and the wife shared that her husband, though briefly concerned for the girl, supported the decision. They chose to spend their vacation budget on something enjoyable instead. This story reminds us that family trips need clear communication and respect, and it’s okay to walk away when the plan feels unfair.
