Fire departments like Umatilla County Fire District #1 in Oregon have shared this warning widely. Despite the risks, many still use power strips with heaters, unaware of the danger. The Toledo Fire Department in Ohio also reported a severe fire caused by a space heater plugged into an unsafe setup.
Space heaters can get extremely hot—up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit—so safety rules are crucial. Always plug heaters directly into wall outlets, never use extension cords or power strips, keep a clear area of at least three feet around the heater, don’t leave them unattended, and place them on flat, stable surfaces.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that electric heaters cause around 1,200 home fires each year. The problem usually comes from misuse, not the heaters themselves. Proper use is essential to prevent accidents.
Other household appliances like hairdryers and toasters also pose fire risks if left plugged in when not in use. Extension cords should be a temporary solution only. Homes with old wiring should consider upgrades to avoid electrical hazards.
Damaged cords are dangerous and should be replaced immediately. Follow all safety instructions that come with your appliances and be alert for signs like burning smells or hot outlets, which may indicate electrical issues.
