Sonny Blundell, an 18-year-old who had recently moved to Queensland to start a new job in concreting, died after a tragic accident at his apartment. Originally from New South Wales, Sonny had relocated just a month earlier to begin a new life with his girlfriend.
His sister, Izabella Cromack-Hay, told The Daily Telegraph that Sonny’s move was a proud achievement for him. On June 23, while celebrating with his best friend, Sonny tried to perform a backflip at his apartment but hit his head on the ground.
The following morning, Sonny was found unconscious by a roommate and taken to Queensland Hospital’s ICU. He had suffered a brain injury and remained in a coma. Izabella said Sonny had complained of a headache after the fall but later vomited and passed out.
Sonny experienced multiple strokes and brain bleeding, requiring emergency treatment. A GoFundMe page created by his sister shared the sad news of his passing a week after the accident. The family is now raising money to cover funeral costs and to return Sonny’s body to New South Wales.
Head trauma can be very dangerous. The Mayo Clinic warns that serious brain injuries can cause lasting damage or death. Symptoms include loss of consciousness, severe headaches, vomiting, seizures, and difficulty waking up. Anyone with a concerning head injury should seek medical help immediately.
