One Year On: Trump Remembers Being Targeted in Assassination Bid

One year after a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, turned into an assassination attempt, Donald Trump is speaking about the moment he was nearly killed. On July 13, 2024, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired multiple shots, one of which grazed Trump’s ear.

While Trump escaped fatal injury, a bystander, retired fire chief Corey Comperatore, was killed, and two others were hurt. Crooks was then shot dead by a Secret Service sniper. In an interview with Lara Trump for Fox News, the former president described the event as “unforgettable.”

“I didn’t know exactly what was going on. I got whacked. There’s no question about that,” Trump said, adding that he reacted quickly as multiple shots were fired.

He criticized the Secret Service for what he called a “bad day,” citing a lack of coordination and security in the building. However, he lauded the Secret Service sniper who took down the gunman in just a few seconds.

Six agents were suspended afterward, with Comperatore’s widow expressing strong criticism. One of the suspended agents, Myosoty Perez, had been assigned to secure the area that day, though her lawyer noted she wasn’t overseeing all security.

Just two months later, Trump faced another assassination attempt at his Florida golf club, where Secret Service again intervened to stop an armed man.
