I’ve always loved being a grandmother, so when my daughter-in-law Jessica asked me to watch my grandson Luke for a weekend, I gladly agreed. I packed my bag, brought snacks, and looked forward to a joyful time with Luke while giving Jessica and my son Aaron a break.
But after the weekend, I came home to find a note from Jessica with a bill for my stay. At first, it seemed reasonable—small charges for snacks and diapers. Then I saw fees for watching TV, drinking water, and even using the guest bathroom. I was shocked and hurt. I had cared for Luke out of love, not for payment.
I felt like my kindness was ignored and that I was being treated like a stranger in my own family. I debated confronting Jessica right away but chose to write a calm message instead. I told her I was hurt and expected respect, not bills.
Jessica’s reply was cold and vague, offering no real apology. Since then, things have felt strained. I still babysit Luke occasionally, but the sadness remains. I’m unsure if I’m overreacting or if my feelings are valid. After all the love I’ve given, I didn’t expect this treatment. I’m now looking for advice on how to handle this.
