In a shocking case of animal neglect, a 6-year-old dog was rescued by the South Plains SPCA, covered in severely matted fur that had caused him immense distress. The dog, later named Matt, was found with rotten skin spots, overgrown nails, and hair so matted it had grown into his skin.
According to Kim Moyers, president of the South Plains SPCA, Matt’s condition was the worst case of dog neglect they had ever encountered. “His hair growth was about five years of matting,” Moyers said. “It’s just awful that he was probably seen in different places and overlooked.”
The SPCA took Matt in and provided him with the care he desperately needed. Due to the severity of his matting, Matt had to be sedated before his grooming session. The process was painstaking, with groomers having to cut through a collar and leash embedded in his fur.
