A woman related to the owners of Darling Downs Zoo in Queensland was attacked by a lioness on July 5, resulting in the loss of her arm. The woman was visiting the carnivore area and observing keepers when the lioness unexpectedly grabbed her arm.
The zoo said she was experienced with the animals and familiar with safety rules, having visited many times over two decades. The lioness stayed inside its enclosure, and no other visitors or staff were at risk.
The woman was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and underwent emergency surgery. Sadly, the injury was so severe that amputation was necessary.
Authorities are investigating the incident, while the zoo confirmed the lioness was healthy and will not be euthanized. The owners thanked emergency responders and supporters and announced the zoo will reopen soon with regular activities.
