Excessive Turmeric Supplement Use Nearly Causes Liver Failure in Woman

Katie Mohan from New Jersey faced a life-threatening health scare after taking large doses of turmeric supplements. Known for its anti-inflammatory effects, turmeric is popular for easing joint pain, but Mohan’s high intake led to severe liver damage.

She noticed symptoms like nausea, exhaustion, and darkened urine, prompting her to seek urgent medical care. Doctors found her liver enzymes were dangerously elevated—60 times above normal levels—putting her just one step away from liver failure.

The World Health Organization recommends a daily turmeric dose of up to 3 mg per kilogram of body weight, which for Mohan was about 200 mg. However, she was taking over 2,000 mg a day, far exceeding safe limits.

Dr. Nikolaos Pyrsopoulos from NYU explained that without treatment, Mohan might have needed a liver transplant. Thankfully, her liver began to recover after a week in the hospital, showing the organ’s remarkable ability to heal.
