Brooklyn Aleksic, a 20-year-old student and curler from Canada, has been left paralyzed from the neck down after a sudden illness. Brooklyn was about to begin a summer job at a golf course when she woke up unable to move. Her family describes this as a heartbreaking turn after a time of success and happiness.
Brooklyn’s mother told CTV News that within two hours, Brooklyn lost all movement below her neck. Doctors diagnosed her with transverse myelitis, an inflammation of the spinal cord causing severe paralysis. A GoFundMe page created by her former coach explains that Brooklyn cannot move her legs, sit up, or care for herself. Recovery is possible but will be difficult and expensive.
Brooklyn is receiving plasma exchange therapy, which depends on donations from many people. Her coach explained that 14 treatments require plasma from around 175 donors. Brooklyn encourages eligible donors to join “Brook’s Plasma Pals” at blood.ca to help others like her.
The fundraiser supports medical costs, equipment, and care as Brooklyn adapts to her new life. Despite everything, Brooklyn stays strong and positive, inspiring those around her. The family asks for donations or shares to help support her ongoing treatment.
